Telecommuting an option?!

The Job Search and Moving: What You Need to Know

Moving is hard enough, but you also need to think about your job when you move. If you're lucky, you have a job that allows you to work remotely from home and you can work from anywhere. That makes moving much easier. For those who don't have that luxury, there's some extra planning to do. Here's what you need to think about:
  • The first thing you need to do is get your resume ready. If you are able, have a professional resume writer take a look and polish it up.
  • Consider removing your address from your resume. Recruiters and companies may prefer to hire locally. If you need to list an address, you can list it as something like "Relocating to Washington DC, in July 2021." This will reassure them that you have a plan in place.
  • If you don't have a remote telecommute job already, is it possible that your position could be turned into one? If think it's safe to ask and not risk losing your job, think about talking to your employer about turning your position into a telecommuting one. If you are a high performer and they don't want to lose you, they may be willing to consider this option.
  • The other possibility with your current employer is transferring to another office if there is one close to your new destination, so look into that possibility.
  • It's best to find a job before you move, so start a few months before your move date. Use your network to look for new opportunities to connect with others who might be in your new city. LinkedIn is a great way to search for such connections, including recruiters and job postings in your area. Connect with as many recruiters as you are able.
  • Apply to jobs and explain your relocation move in your cover letter.
  • Be sure to budget for any interview travel that is required in advance of your move. Most companies will not cover these costs for applicants, so you should be aware of these costs. If you're lucky, you'll find a company that will pay something for relocation costs! This is typically reserved for only certain positions within the company and they put a cap on the amount, however it can be quite helpful to your moving budget.
