10 Safety Tips to Avoid Injury While Moving

Moving can be exhausting and it's during that time that you let your guard down. You're prone to injury. We as professional movers have certainly learned on the job what works and doesn't work. So we're sharing some basic tips to keep you safe while you are preparing your move or if you have decided to move some things on your own.
  1. Closed toe shoes are a must in order to prevent injuries to your toes and sneakers or work boots will help prevent some injuries resulting from tripping over unsecured shoes. Ankle and knee injuries are common during moves, so sensible shoes will reduce the chance of these occurring. Choosing jeans or long pants will also reduce your chance of cuts and scrapes, also common during moves.
  2. Plan: Make sure you think things through. Does everything fit through the doorway without being taken apart? Before you start moving out the front, does your couch fit or will it get stuck? Trying to shove it through can result in injury and will result in damage to your couch or doorway. So, plan and measure large furniture before you move them.
  3. Remind yourself to slow down. Don't rush and don't carry too much at one time. Carrying a heavy load will strain your back and carrying too many things will result in dropping it and hurting yourself. Hint: disassemble tables, beds, and anything else large and awkward/heavy.
  4. Never lift anything over your head. It is too easy to strain your muscles with this movement.
  5. Life with your legs and bend with your knees. Do not just bend over at the waist to pick something up, as this puts too much pressure and strains your back. See the picture above as a guide.
  6. Don't overpack your boxes. Making them too heavy will put strain on your body when lifting them. Pack heavy items (books) in small boxes.  Pack light items into large items.  Do not pack heavy items in large boxes.
  7. Use dollies or carts to move boxes and furniture from one area to another. This will save you time and conserve your energy.
  8. Keep pathways clear. If there is someone in the way, your chance of tripping and injury increases greatly.
  9. Stay hydrated and nourished while you are packing and moving and be sure to take enough breaks. If you are tired, you are much more likely to injure yourself.
  10. Ask for help! Call your family or friends to help or hire a moving company to pack your boxes and do the moving for you. Maybe call Mic's Moving ;)
