Packing Your Shoes to Move

Most of us probably have a few old pairs of shoes that need to be retired. Moving is a good time to figure out if it's time to toss, donate or sell them. Once you have done that, then you can sort them into categories such as those noted below.

Dress Shoes
The ideal way to pack your best and most precious shoes is in the original shoe boxes, if still have them. You can stuff your shoes with packing paper or socks and use rolled up magazines to fill tall boots. Filling out the shoes will protect their shape best during transit and also works well for storage. Be sure to wrap them in paper inside the box to further protect them from scuffing.

Athletic & Miscellaneous Shoes
If you don't have boxes, you should pack by lining the box with some packing paper first. Place the heavier shoes in the bottom of the box and the more delicate ones on the top. This way, they will not be squished and ruined. Just as above, think about stuffing your shoes with balled up paper or socks to keep their shape. For shoes with laces, tie them together to ensure that they won't get separated.

Seasonal Shoes
If you have a bunch of winter boots, shoes and slippers, pack them together. Summer sandals, water shoes, and sneakers? Pack a separate box of those with the appropriate label. You get the drift!

Essential Shoes
Don't forget to reserve two or three pair for your easy access once you arrive to your new home. Pack them in your essentials packing that you will have labeled to unpack first, or in a suitcase that you know has your essentials.
