Movers Can't Move Everything: Restricted Items
You've checked some items off your to do list in planning your move and it's time to pack. You have much to do. Before moving day, you need to keep in mind that there are certain items that moving companies will not move for you. That means you will need to move them yourself or you will need to discard them properly if they are hazardous.
Hazardous Materials:
This list is not complete, but demonstrates that anything potentially explosive is hazardous. What should you transport yourself or dispose of properly? Acids, aerosol cans, ammonia, ammunition, batteries, bleach, car batteries, charcoal, chemistry sets, cleaning solvents, fertilizer, fire extinguishers, fireworks, gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, loaded weapons, matches, motor oil, nail polish and remover, oxygen bottles, paint, paint thinner, pool chemicals, propane tanks, scuba tanks, sterno fuel, weed killer. Note: Please check with your local authority on where you can take these to dispose of them properly. Do not simply throw them in the trash or down the drain!
Food:
Technically unopened non-perishables can be moved. If you have an interstate move, you should consider donating non-perishables that are not expired, before you move. Perishable items should be consumed prior to leaving or toss them.
Plants:
For an interstate move, check with your State Plant Regulatory Official to see if you are permitted to transport your plants across state lines. The problem is not the plant itself, it's the insects and disease that they might carry which are the problem!
Valuables:
Valuables may not be against the moving company's policies to move, however it is just good judgement to move them yourself. Examples include family heirlooms, important documents (wills, deeds, bonds, birth certificates, etc), jewelry, cash, collectibles and family photos.
