It's Time to Unpack After the Move: What First?!

So the movers have dropped all of your boxes and furniture. There's so much to do that it's overwhelming, right?! Don't panic, there is a process and we can help. One thing to keep to keep in mind is that you want to make it functional to start but add some personal touches like a few family photos or other items to make it homey.

Make your beds: If a local move, we have a suggestion for something to do while the movers are still movings things into your new home. We suggest that you make your beds. You'll thank yourself later when you're exhausted and ready to crash. You'll need to prep your bedding in a box that you pack in your own car or have the movers unload that box first. Once the beds are in place and you are not in the way of the movers (very important!), you can grab the bedding and make your beds. Done and ready for zzzzzz!

Essentials: Of course, you'll want to make sure you have your essentials unpacked and available asap. Consider this your overnight bag of personal stuff from medicine, toiletries, baby/pet food to clothes for the first day or two. You'l also need immediate things like toilet paper, soap, paper towels, cleaning products and some basic food items. You'll want to make sure there is toilet paper, soap and paper towels or a hand towel available in each bathroom.

Go with the Big Stuff.  Make your primary rooms (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen) functional, ensuring the furniture works for now. Get those pieces into place and ensure a working flow.

Functioning kitchen: Appliances, big and small, need to be plugged in and ready to use. Find your boxes with pots and pans. Pull out what you need to get started if you don't want to unpack the entire kitchen yet. If you have it and have time, line you cupboards and shelves first. Then organize your dishes and glasses and fill the drawers with cutlery and serving utensils. Don't feel like you have to have everything done perfectly. Get some things in place so that it's functional to start. Come back later after you have lived in it for a few days and see if you want to switch things around, then unpack the rest and organize.

Sleeping Chambers: If this wasn't a local move, now's the time to work on your beds. Do you have closet organizers? It's best to install early before you begin unpacking those clothes. If you have kids and they are old enough, enlist them to help unpacking with their own rooms. Give them age appropriate tasks to engage them in the process.

Bath and Throne: You'll need to unpack your towels, toiletries and install a shower curtain if required. If you forgot it above, get the toilet paper and soap, please. There's nothing worse than no toilet paper!

The Rest: From here, you can move on to your other rooms like your living room and dining room. Your last areas of focus should be the basement, utility, garage, etc. Of course, always unpack what you might need to be functional first. If you find yourself working on an area or boxes that aren't necessities in the beginning, just stop yourself and get back on track with priorities.
