How to Forward Your Mail When You Move

As much as you don't like getting junk mail, you do need need to make sure that you get your mail at your new address once you move. More importantly, you don't want to miss out on any fun or critical correspondence from family and friends or getting bills on time.

The easiest way to make sure you get your mail is to forward your mail. You can do this easily now by going online to the USPS and submitting an official change of address form. Here's what you need to know about the process.
  • Notify the post office whether this is a permanent move or a temporary change. If you have moved and are staying at this address for some time, then select permanent address change.
  • Select your start date for forwarding.
  • A credit card will be used to identify you and it will be charged $1.
  • You will receive a letter from the USPS confirming that this request has been made and you will also receive a package that contains coupons that may be helpful after moving. Typical coupon examples you may see are Crate&Barrel, Lowes, Wayfair and Overstock.
  • Once everything is set, anyone who has mailed something to the old address will automatically be forwarded to your new address. Of course, there will be a slight delay in delivery to you since the mail will be relabeled with your new address and forwarded to you.
  • Of course, it is best to notify everyone of your change in address and not rely on the mail forwarding which has a maximum forwarding period of one year. You should change the address directly for all of your bills so that they arrive to you directly. That way you won't receive any late fee charges.
  • Note that magazines and catalogs will not be forwarded as part of the USPS forwarding service, so be sure to change those address yourself.
If you prefer to speak with someone in person at USPS, you can always go to your local post office and they will assist you. You will complete a form on site and the service will be free versus the $1 online fee.

For those who want mail bundled to come once a week, you can pay the post office to do so for you. Look into Premium Forwarding Services which will cost you a fee.
